Benefit of Material to Systems Application

The characteristics of copper tubing have proven it to be an excellent and economical choice for use in smaller capacity chilled water systems. However, carbon steel is the most popular material for chilled water distribution. Copper’s thermal conductivity makes it most effective in the terminal units of chilled water systems such as: individual coil units, air handling units or Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, allowing an installer to keep construction materials cost down and aiding in system longevity.

In systems requiring high flow rates, steel or other materials should be used instead of copper. Another disadvantage to copper is, in hard piping systems, minerals tend to build up on the interior wall causing scaling and oxidation of the copper and eventually creating pinholes and leakage in the piping. For this reason water treatment to maintain pH levels is often involved with all chilled water systems.

System Application and Material Usage

Copper tubing has a wide variety of sizes to meet the needs of chilled water applications, however, the sizes used most for chilled water piping range from 1/4" through 12", with economics limiting copper use to 6" or 8" diameter tube. 

Chilled water systems are typically installed with Type M hard drawn tubing, though Type L can also be used; Type K is typically reserved for high pressure risers or buried applications where its increased strength and wall thickness are required. 

Joints may be soldered, brazed, or roll grooved for use with a mechanical coupling, flanged, or other mechanical joining methods.
