Benefit of Material to Systems Application

Typical fire protection systems are wet, dry, deluge, and pre-action.  Wet systems are typically in temperature controlled environments and are most often constructed of carbon steel. However, dry systems can be used in heated and non-heated environments and in corrosive and external environments such as sea coasts or parking garages. For these dry pipe systems in which aggressively corrosive conditions can cause premature deterioration of unprotected carbon steel piping, galvanized steel is a preferred material by many authorities. The galvanized coating will provide a protective coating to the pipe, extending the life of the piping system. Galvanized steel pipe provides the high strength and internal pressure rating of steel as well as a protective Zinc coating for corrosion resistance. It is an accepted and Listed/Approved material for Fire Protection systems in accordance with NFPA 13.

System Application and Material Usage

Galvanized steel pipe is available in typical fire protection sizes of ½" – 12" and is also available in larger sizes where necessary.  The mechanical properties of galvanized steel pipe and its high burst pressures make it suitable in all fire protection systems.

Some systems utilize specialty thin-wall galvanized steel pipe that is thinner than schedule 10 for piping 2” and smaller. NFPA allows the use of galvanized carbon steel pipe for fire protection systems.  UL and FM also have approved or listed galvanized carbon steel pipes for these systems.  Galvanized pipe cannot be used in foam systems due to a potential adverse reaction to foams.

Galvanized pipe may be cut or roll grooved for use with grooved mechanical couplings.  It may also be threaded or flanged.  It should be noted that whenever galvanized is cut, as when cut-grooved or threaded, the zinc coating is removed and the corrosion resistance is lost.

Many health hazards are associated with welding of galvanized pipe, therefore welding is not a common joining method and flanges must be threaded onto galvanized pipe or welded onto the pipe prior to it being galvanized. Further, welding burns off the zinc coating, so the welded area will be susceptible to corrosion.
