Benefit of Material to Systems Application

Due to its ability to stand up to a broad range of chemicals including acids, chlorine, bromine, alcohols, hydrocarbons, and oxidants, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) pipe is a popular choice for process piping applications.

PVDF offers high thermal stability, resistance to radiation, excellent long-term property retention in sunlight, and good overall mechanical strength.

The high abrasion resistance of PVDF gives it an advantage over other plastic piping materials where fluid flow over time can erode away particulates from the inner pipe wall.

PVDF piping is also easier to install and less expensive than many metal piping systems suitable for use in process applications.

System Application and Material Usage

Common end use applications for PVDF piping systems are Pulp and Paper, Semiconductor, General Chemical distribution, Nuclear, Mining, Metal Preparation, BioPharma, Petrochemical, Food & Beverage, Wastewater, Pesticides, Biodiesel, and Ethanol production.

PVDF piping and tubing systems are available in a wide range of inner diameter sizes, wall thicknesses, and supported structures depending on the desired stiffness. Single wall and double wall configurations are available in diameters from 1 inch to 12 inch.

PVDF is also available as flexible tubing with a flexural modulus, or measure of stiffness by ratio of stress to strain, that is one-sixth that of pipe-grade PVDF. Depending on pipe diameter and wall thickness, socket-welded systems can be rated up to 976 psi at room temperature.  Safety ratings at various temperatures can be easily calculated using correction factors.

Mechanical systems are typically available at 2 inch diameters and below.  These systems can be rated up to 150 psi at room temperature.

PVDF copolymer-lined steel piping systems are also available in standard sizes up to 12 inches, combining the purity and chemical resistance of PVDF with the structural support of steel. These systems are very resistant to distortion from pressure and temperature.

PVDF pipe has been certified to meet ASTM E-84 and UL 723 standards for flame spread and smoke generation. The certification means that PVDF piping systems can be used safely in areas such as air plenums that are protected in the International Mechanical Code.  In addition to being non-combustible, PVDF pipe is able to maintain much of its strength and chemical resistance within a broad temperature range of -40°F to 285°F.
