Benefit of Material to Systems Application

CPVC pipe is an excellent choice for chemical waste drainage applications. Although metal pipe has traditionally been used for chemical waste drainage and can withstand higher temperatures and pressures, CPVC pipe has some significant advantages including corrosion resistance, chemical inertness, and resistance to scale build-up which can cause pressure drops within the system. Also, initial material costs, labor costs and maintenance costs for CPVC pipe are all low compared with metal pipe.

CPVC pipe displays greater flexural strength and crush resistance than PVC pipe, and can withstand higher temperatures as well, up to 200°F. However, each piping material has different qualities, so consult the manufacturer and codes to choose the correct pipe for the particular chemicals it will be carrying.

System Application and Material Usage

CPVC pipe for chemical waste applications is typically available in sizes up to 12 inches in Schedule 40 dimensions. Schedule designations indicated the pressure capacity of the pipe. Chemical waste drainage systems must be designed to convey the mixtures of corrosive liquids generated by commercial and industrial laboratories to the point where they are sufficiently diluted or neutralized before discharge into the sanitary sewer system.  Always check with the product manufacturer for chemical resistance recommendations for these applications.

One-step solvent cement is used to join pipe, fittings, and adapters. Adapters are available for connecting to threaded, flanged or grooved piping systems. It is important to use the correct solvent for joining CPVC, as an unapproved product could react with the chemical waste.

Hanger spacing is determined by the pipe size and operating temperature of the system. Metal hangers such as double-bolt pipe clamps, anchor straps, split ring hangers, clevis hangers, adjustable swivel rings and roller hangers work well for this application. Be sure to allow for expansion because plastic pipe expands up to five times as much as metal pipe during temperature fluctuations.
